An Open Prayer

Cosmically, my little world means nothing at all
Everyone here in the room has a reason to weep
Sacrifices we hate, and the secrets we keep
Is it selfish for me to ask you to intervene
In the life and the care of one person important to me
She’s sick and she’s tired, she’s weak, and she’s trying to be brave
Dutifully taking her treatments, she’s so far away

I believe you can do much more than I’m praying for
And all I’m asking for is an ordinary miracle
They say there’s no impossible prayer; will you find her there
When all I’m asking for is an ordinary miracle

I’m confronted by newspaper eyes and photographed tears
Pages of pictures of people living their fears
While short sighted patriots waving their flags in the air
Step on the children who’re starving and think you don’t care

In the face of such suffering,
why would you hear when I speak
I’m praying for one woman’s life in a world full of need
How can I justify – why should you hear when I call
Why should you save her life – when you don’t save them all?

I believe you can do much more than I’m praying for
And all I’m asking for is an ordinary miracle

And for you it would be child’s play
To take her pain away…but me;
It would make it so easy to believe.
